This weekend brought a couple of long-promised projects to completion. First was plumbing up some microirrigation in the greenhouse so that peppers and basil can thrive during upcoming vacation. Later on Saturday, I joined Katie to run in the Mid Summer’s Night 5K Run. Katie and crew performed awesomely – couch-to-5K was a resounding success! As for myself, I always find it difficult not to push myself when others are ahead of me. That combined with only one other guy in my age group helped me finish with a blue ribbon. I certainly did not expect that with my very modest 25+ minute finish, but it does feel good nonetheless. Finally today I cut loose with the shop-vac, sucked some cobwebs in the garage, ran some wire, and installed a keyed garage door opener. Bulky wireless transmitters don’t cut it for bicycle-only living so this should be really convenient. Here comes the photo evidence:

At long last, my coffee table is finished. About one and one half years ago this project was started and actually saw really good progress until all the cutting and fitting was completed. For months it sat waiting only for some sanding and finishing. Unfortunately, this is the phase that I like the least. I basically feel incompetent at wood finishing and for some reason in my head this seems like a frivolous exercise best left to the reader. Of course in reality I didn’t do too bad of a finishing job and gee golly it actually looks a heck-of-a lot better than raw unsanded wood. Now I can start thinking about that desk I’ve been wanting to build. Look for a post about that probably sometime in 2010.

Craftsman style coffee table of cherry and finished in a blond shellac.

Update: here are some photos of the jig I put together to guide the table top on edge in order to cut the underside bevels.

Long time no post, no? Since I don’t seem to have any good solid thoughts on any one single topic, I’ll just serve up a few bites/bytes here for anyone who hasn’t given up on this distillery.

Last weekend, the igloo crew ventured out again determined to do the job correctly this time. I’m happy to report a success! Of course things were made a little easier with the nifty Ice-Box igloo building tool I splurged on last month. Photos of our 11ft diameter dome can be seen here and here. Now that we’re experienced, I fully intend to construct a few solid shelters for some serious wintertime hiking/skiing/climbing next season.

Blogging about writing about blogging: This is what I’ve come to, and yet its circularity is quite soothing. I finally finished reading Just a Geek by Wil Wheaton. In this book, Wil documents how his blog helped to transform him from actor into author and ultimately help him find happiness with who he had become as a person, husband, father, and of course geek. Thanks for laying yourself out on the line, Wil. You’ve certainly inspired many a struggling blogger including myself!

Last month I had the privilege to see David Byrne lecture at the Portland Art Museum. Entitled Envisioning Emotional Epistemological Information, the talk was all about his work with PowerPoint as an artistic medium. Now, I know I made a promise to (ahem) review this presentation with a PowerPoint presentation myself, but lets be truthful here: I didn’t strike while the iron was hot, and so unless I find myself with loads of spare time on my hands its probably not going to happen. That is, unless another lecture attendee perhaps sparks some collaboration.

Speaking of my dear Pedestrian Saga, I am thoroughly excited to be bidding the valley a fond farewell next weekend as I meet up with Katyenka for untold adventures sure to be found in the land of giants. The wood elf in me cannot resist the beckon of the trees in Sequoia National Forest, while the 80’s wolf in me cannot resist more fun with the brat pack.

Arrivederci!

This evening I somehow found myself tagging along in a last minute holiday shopping spree. “Sure I’ll go along. I’ve got nothing much else going on this evening” I thought. Then the reality struck. Suddenly I was what seemed like hours into Brand X building store moving along in the energy draining shopper’s march. I was quite impressed with the very polished and eager store associates who seemed to be crawling throughout every isle ready to pledge their life of service at the merest twitch of an eyebrow. Oh how polished these fresh recruits were! But the store has only been open for 5 days you see. I would love (love is such a strong word here) to revisit in about 5 months to compare and contrast the enthusiasm of the two time slices. That should be about enough time for corporate big box to eat its employees’ souls. At least I had fun rearranging the magnetic labels on the shelfs. I should have pulled out my stopwatch and recruited one of those overzealous employees to play a Rice-Is-Pright-like pricing game with my jumbled up price tags. Ah, but the cheery voice came over the loud speaker to announce the store was closing. Saved – but not quite.

Just down the road my party discovered the 24hr super-duper-megamongous YYZ-mart. A surge of panic begin to overtake me but then my anti-shopping anti-bodies started to kick in. Evasive actions were in order so I called upon my natural defensive instincts. Rather than continue as a dreary shopper, I transformed myself into one whose sole purpose for visiting was to play and not to buy. All merchandise and merchandising equipment became fair targets for my entertainment. A short list of discoveries included:

Charlie Brown action figure set:

I was suspicious of the motives behind the exclusion of two very prominent characters, namely Peppermint Patty and Marcie. Perhaps the toy manufacturer felt that they had neutralized their shame by including the less prominent minority character, Franklin? Oh thank you for protecting our children from the evils of suggestive cartoon characters! (does sarcasm come through very well in print?)

Baby animals sticker book:

Featuring cute baby vultures

Cans of boneless chicken:

Straight from the rough and rowdy boneless chicken farm I’m sure

“Deco Tape – Girly Tape”:

Cellophane tape with prints of pastel flowers and pre-teen female expressions “Sassy!” Sadly missing was “Manly Tape” with crushed beer cans, broken skulls, and expressions such as “Skin ‘em alive!”

“Pipettes”:

Wax candy shaped like pipes. Evidently the pipe smoking lobby was successful at protecting their interests when anti candy cigarette legislation was passed into law years ago

Year of the Rooster Chinese Horoscope:

As a rabbit, I am ensured a happy and prosperous 2005 as long as I stay away from the “popular crowd” or anyone who might cause any undue vexation. I should visit China someday

Random packet of chewing gum:

Oh how you freaked me out as I watched your package expand and contract as if you were breathing like some possessed confectionary. Mmm, possessed confectionary…

Gift registry kiosk:

Even though Mr. and Mrs. J. Miller’s baby was due on Dec. 19, I was thrilled anyway to print out their want list to get a peek at the shopping desires of new parents. I was un-thrilled that the list failed to include the address or phone number of my new friends. How am I supposed to deliver that umbilicare body suit that they requested?

This entry was in no way meant to belittle the evening or the merry people who accompanied me. If anything it should be read as a lesson in experience transformation through mere attitude shift.

Today I was enticed to head for the coat for Lincoln City’s fall kite festival. (still home to the eyebrow-raising Filthy Lapdog Cabbage Depository) On the drive to the coast I followed a railroad track most of the way and imagined myself making the same trip via rail-bike. Anyway I arrived at the beach of D-River (supposedly the world’s shortest) but the wind wasn’t cooperating so there weren’t too many kites to be seen (at least not in the air). This did not faze me however, as there are always endless miles of beach to be walked. So walk I did! Through the sounds of crashing waves, I decided that this (the beach) would be the perfect place to play some live music. A trio composed of bongos, didgeridoo, and mandolin would suit me quite well. (hmm, coincidentally similar to what I’ve been listening to lately) Now that I have the vision, I just need to get a band put together. Any volunteers? (No experience necessary – I can hardly play any of the mentioned instruments) If the music made turned out to be too unbearable, we could always just flop back into the sand and laugh up into the sky!

Once upon a time, I had a website where I would share various happenings in my life. For example, I woud embellish upon last weekend’s theme of cycling and disc golf, or the prior weekend’s road trip to a David Byrne concert followed by the fantastic Oregon coast on the return leg. Heck I probably would have even waxed philosophy on the Pacific Northwest’s strange obsession with coffee and how the humble bagel has mystical powers to nourish the body as well as the soul. If I were feeling really ambitous, I might have even posted a photo of the shipwreck I discovered on the beach. That would have been (as some of the locals say) “Hella cool!”

Hellif I weren’t lazy though. Thats what happens when you do much computer programming – you get lazy. So lazy that even simple decisions seem like a lot of work. Last week I made a program that would randomly choose a place to go for lunch. It was a big hit at the office like I somehow lifted this great burden from the shoulders of all the programmers whom I work with. Now if only I could write a program to write the silly stuff like I’m spewing right now. Or maybe I already have – and this really isn’t me typing? That would be quite wicked now wouldn’t it?

(Later the next day) “Magic eight ball? Hmmm…”

Hats off to the Lakeland High School Class of 1994. After ten years of loathing the idea of a class reunion, I actually had a change of heart. Yesterday, had it not been for the 3000 miles or so from my hometown, I would have actually attended. A friend of mine recently shared her reunion experiences of meeting old class mates with whom she had hardly any contact with in school, yet had transformed into amazing and interesting individuals since graduation. Re-meeting just one such person would make a reunion worth any funky memories or embarassment, in my opinion.

So to those that managed to go, good for you! If you missed my presence, let it be known that no I am not married, I do not have children, I still have all my hair, and about the same sized body from 10 years ago. Aside from that you should be able to glean a bit about my life on these web pages. If by chance you are a classmate whom I haven’t talked to recently, by all means send me a message. I’d be interested in hearing your tales!

Well, dear readers, I regretfully say that this is the end of your heroic captain for I have met my doom at last! As you can see on my previously classified radar board below, I have not only been SUNK and DEFEATED: I have been utterly EMBARASSED by such a large margin of victory for my opponent who, according to intelligence, has never won Battleship before! I could cry foul and claim illegal assistance or convenient manipulation of ship positions but to what use? Better to take my defeat graciously and look forward to my new life living with the fishes. Beware my dastardly friend: for what vengeful plots may arise during my deep-sea sabattical, only your now gloating command will feel the wrath!

Six days ago The Summer of Scott got an early start as I decided to attempt a round of Frolf – or disc golf as its more commonly called. Thinking I was pretty smart for purchasing a bright orange driver that couldn’t possibly get lost, I stepped up to the first hole and let ‘er fly! I then spent the next 15 minutes combing through the waste high grass for my suddenly invisible disc after it decided midflight to take ‘the scenic route’. Well, by the 18th hole things were a little better but I’ve plenty of room for improvement. Even with my miserable playing, I still had a blast. Almost as much fun as walking barefoot through split pea soup!
